On this international Woman’s day I am filled with gratitude. I am a custodian, ever mindful of Garrick Law’s unique history and the power to change the direction of a lay client’s life. The most important lesson of all is to find your bravery because the most crucial impact that a lawyer can have is to protect the innocent. At the inception of Garrick Law equality and diversity within the legal profession was not recognised as a unique selling point in the world of financial and serious crime. Championing gender diversity was not recognised as being equated with excellence. There were often occasions when I would walk into a multi defendant trial and find myself the only female in the court.
Gender diversity was my mission.
Now 6 years on I feel so proud of the Garrick Law team and all the positive changes we have made together, to break the bias and stereotypes of women in the field of business and serious crime. I am delighted, that it would not now be unusual to come across a female Judge, KC, Barrister, Solicitor and Court clerk all breaking barriers in one court room.
By bringing a broader range of voices and opinions to Garrick Law we have had the capacity to engage with clients in a more meaningful way. The world is changing and it is imperative that the legal profession changes to recognise the excellent contribution women make to it. Whilst reflection is important, the Garrick Law team keenly have our eyes on the future.
If I have one request of you on this important day, it is to take this opportunity to approach and compliment any woman you admire in the profession and thank them for their contribution. Without these powerful women the legal profession would not excel.
